Looking northeast towards the corner of Dundas St E and Mutual St in the Garden District of Toronto.
The archive photo shows the many businesses once at the corner, including Tom’s Open Kitchen, Alex Tailor, Deny’s Barbecue Delicatessen, Ted’s Variety Store, Day-N-Nite Cleaners, and the old Warwick Hotel, which featured a Coca-Cola ad.
The 2½-storey buff-brick homes at the corner were constructed in 1877/78, when the street was known as Crookshank St. Originally part of a row of three homes, only two remain today. They were designed by architects Stewart & Strickland in the Second Empire style and feature projecting bays, dormer windows, and a mansard roof. The first occupants included a milliner, an insurance agent and an accountant. Currently, the corner storefront is also occupied by Plug Canna6is. As of writing this post, the building at 152-154 Dundas St E is not listed on the city’s heritage register.
