Looking northeast towards the corner of Dundas St E and Mutual St in the Garden District of Toronto.
Businesses in the archive photo include Tom’s Open Kitchen, The Fruit Cave, Deny’s Barbecue Delicatessen, Ted’s Variety Store with a Pepsi sign, Day-N-Nite Cleaners and Five Colors (spelled with no “u”) Painless Tattoo. The old photo also shows the Warwick Hotel featuring a Coca-Cola ad. Built in 1910 and originally the Royal Cecil Apartments, the Warwick closed in 1980 and was demolished soon after.
The corner building at 152-154 Dundas St E dates to the late 1870s, and today the corner storefront is occupied by Plug Canna6is.
In the left background of both photos, the Brutalist-style cantilevered structure, completed in 1971, was originally the head office of Simpsons-Sears.
