Looking southeast along King St E from Yonge St, in the St Lawrence neighbourhood of Toronto.
The archive photo shows the busy streetscape about 70 years ago, with several businesses lining the street, including the CP Ticket Office, Scott’s Restaurant, Letros Bros. Restaurant, Cooper Men’s Wear, and the King Edward Hotel.
Two buildings remain constant in both photos. The first is the Canadian Pacific Railway Building, in the foreground on the right, which was built between 1911 and 1913. Today, its storefront is home to a Shoppers Drug Mart location. The second building is the King Edward Hotel, visible in the distance on the left. This historic hotel was constructed in two phases: the original structure, characterized by its curved corner, was completed in 1903, and the 18-storey addition was finished in 1921.
