Looking northeast towards the corner of Yonge St and Carlton St, in the Downtown Yonge area neighbourhood of Toronto.
The archive photo shows several businesses at the corner, including, from right to left, the Edythe Shoppe, United Cigar Store, Holly’s Candy Shop and Royal Lunch. The vintage photo also shows the former location where Carlton St intersected with Yonge St. In 1931, several buildings at the corner, from 443 to 449 Yonge St, including those shown in the photo, were demolished to straighten the jog where Carlton St and College St meet. The change was made to reduce congestion at the busy intersection.
The present-day photo shows where the streets intersect today, which is about 29 metres (95 feet) north of the original location. It’s home to a retail and office building known as Carlton Towers.
