Looking northeast towards the corner of Yonge St and Alexander St in the Downtown Yonge area of Toronto.
The archive photo shows the Colling Tire Shop, which was located at 495 Yonge St from 1919 to 1950, after which the shop moved diagonally across the street. This corner building, dating to the late 1800s, along with the others on the east-side stretch of Yonge St from Alexander St to Maitland St, was demolished in the early 1950s for the construction of the Yonge Subway Line, now known as Line 1 or the Yonge–University Line.
The subway opened in 1954, after which the block was redeveloped. Those replacement buildings have also since been torn down to make way for the Teahouse Condos, completed in 2023 .
