Looking southeast across Yonge St towards McGill St in the Downtown Yonge area of Toronto. The intersection where McGill St and Yonge St meet was closed in the early 1980s, and between the two buildings, Turko Park was created.
The stone McGill Street Arch, shown in the present-day photo, came from the previous St. Andrew’s United Church building, once located on Bloor St E, opposite Park Rd. The church was demolished in 1981, and its stone arch was preserved, relocated and rebuilt here as a pedestrian gateway.
In the centre background of both photos is 21 McGill St. The building was home to the exclusive Twenty One McGill Club for women. Since 1994, it has served as the administrative offices for Covenant House Toronto.
