Looking southwest towards the corner of King St E and George St, in the Old Town, St Lawrence neighbourhood of Toronto.
The building located directly at the corner dates back to approximately 1833. It was originally the Imported British & India Goods Wholesale Warehouse, owned by George Monro, a dry-goods merchant who served as the Mayor of Toronto in 1841. Mr. Monro and his family lived just down the street at the northeast corner of George St and Front St E, in a residence that later became the former Black Horse Hotel.
Back to King St E, the neighbouring buildings, which also date to the mid-1800s, still stand today. This row of commercial buildings is among the oldest in the city, and they are all listed on the city’s heritage register. There are plans to construct a mixed-use tower at the site, incorporating the heritage properties at 175-185 King St E into the new development. The cupola of St Lawrence Hall is visible in both images on the right.
