Looking northeast towards the corner of Queen St E and Bertmount Ave, in the Leslieville neighbourhood of Toronto.
The archive photo features the Joy Theatre at 1130 Queen St E. On the marquee, “Tarzan and the Leopard Woman,” starring Johnny Weissmuller, Brenda Joyce and Johnny Sheffield, was playing and released in 1946.
Originally opened in the mid-1910s as the Rex Theatre, the venue was renamed the Joy Theatre in the early 1940s. After closing in the mid-1950s, the building was repurposed to house the Grads Club. From 1989 to 2021, it was occupied by Stratenger’s. Today, the building is home to Dave’s Hot Chicken.
