The G.J. Hooper mosaic tile storefront entryway is located at 1370 Queen St W (between Brock Ave and O’Hara Ave) in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto.
The entrance of the storefront features the name “G.J. HOOPER” displayed on the floor, made from a mosaic of white, green, and red tiles. Mr. Hooper, a skilled sheet metal worker, sold stoves and hardware from this building. His residence was conveniently located above the shop, a living arrangement that began in 1898, according to the Toronto City Directory. By the early 1930s, Mr. Hooper had leased the storefront to Spick and Span Ltd, a company specializing in cleaning and pressing, while still retaining ownership of the building and continuing to reside upstairs. His name appears for the last time at this address in the 1943 directory.
