The archive photo shows a staged accident between an automobile and a streetcar by the Ontario Safety League for publicity purposes.
In the background of both photos is U of T’s Department of Household Science Building. It was constructed from 1908 to 1912 through the generous donation of Lillian Massey Treble “for the promotion of higher scientific learning among the women of Canada.” The Neo-Classical style building designed by architect George Martel Miller received heritage status from the city in 1973. Today, the building is home to the Department of Classics and the Centre for Medieval Studies.
