The building directly at the corner was constructed around 1902. It was designed by architect Eden Smith, with the Dominion Bank occupying a portion of the main floor.
The archive photo captures a long line of bank customers waiting to withdraw their funds. This situation, referred to as a “run on the bank,” was triggered by rumours regarding the bank’s solvency. Observing others withdrawing their money fueled the panic. In the following days, many customers returned their funds to the bank.
