Looking northwest towards the corner of Bay St and Adelaide St W, in what’s known today as Toronto’s Financial District.
The archive photo features a watercolour painting of Doel’s Homestead and Brewery, which was established in 1827 by W.H. Doel. It was one of the early breweries in York and gained a reputation for producing fine beer. However, in the late 1840s, the brewery’s frame structure on the north side of his home was destroyed by fire.
Around 1924, the old two-storey house located at the corner was demolished. The following year, the Northern Ontario Building, designed by architects Chapman and Oxley, was constructed on the site. The Northern Ontario Building at 330 Bay St was listed on the city’s heritage register in 1976.
